Your adrenal glands are the tiny glands that sit on top of your kidneys.
DHEA is the "good" adrenal hormone or anti-aging hormone in the body. It is helpful for memory and cognitive health. It counteracts cortisol, the "bad" adrenal stress hormone in the body.
Optimal DHEA level is 150-200 micrograms/dL in labs (we measure DHEA-sulfate). The nice thing is DHEA levels can be monitored with blood work if we start replacing.
DHEA is also very important for thyroid hormones working at the receptor level.
Over the years in practice I have seen many cases where supplementing DHEA allows us to lower the dose of thyroid hormone replacement. It shows the importance of the thyroid-adrenal axis.
Take only as directed by a healthcare provider, based on your labs. Typical dosing is 1 tablet daily in AM along with pregnenolone 10 mg (the precursor to DHEA.)
